For the first time in Ukraine from May 10 to May 25, 2019, the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupik National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education successfully passed the cycle of thematic improvement “Ocular plastics and eye prosthetics” for the improvement of the qualification of ophthalmologists and surgeons, improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in

diagnostics, conservative and surgical treatment of congenital, traumatic, age-related changes of the auxiliary apparatus of the eye and periorbital area, as well as advanced training in modern eye prosthesis. Curator of the cycle – professor Oksana Petrenko.

The introduction and conduct of the cycle is dictated by the needs of the present within the framework of the implementation of the global program to combat blindness “The Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” and the conditions for Ukraine's integration into European space, and, moreover, numerous appeals from doctors of ophthalmologists and doctors of children's ophthalmology.

The new knowledge on the cycle was received by 28 doctors – managers and residents of the ophthalmologic departments, ophthalmologists, clinics and children's ophthalmologists.

The students of the cycle were acquainted with the latest achievements of modernity in ophthalmology concerning microsurgical reconstructive-restorative methods of ocular plastics and general eye prosthesis.

The methodological level of lectures and seminars was high. Special attention was paid to the lectures devoted to the principles of choosing aesthetic interventions in diseases and lesions of the eyes and periorbital area; anatomical features of the auxiliary apparatus of the eye from the positions of reconstructive ocular plastics; modern diagnostic methods to choose the most reasonable method of surgical intervention, as well as the possibilities of stage rehabilitation treatment. The leading place in the cycle was occupied by practical classes, in which the students studied modern preventive methods of combating surgical and postoperative complications, methods of pain relief, methods of preparation for surgery and post-operative management after ocular plastic surgery, which are at the clinical base of the ophthalmology department at Kyiv Center for Microsurgery of the Eye, due to which the professional skills of the students increased and the technique of basic diagnostic and therapeutic manipulations was worked out.
