The world medical scientific community is gradually accumulating data on how certain organs and systems of the human body respond to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The primary well-known symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, dry cough, and fatigue. However, many of the symptoms experienced by people infected with SARS-CoV-2 involve the nervous system, and, in some cases, they can be the only symptoms at presentation.

Olena V. Tkachenko, Professor, Head of the Department of Neurology No 2 of Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education gave an interview about the undeniable neurological effects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus for Ukrainian medical newspaper "Vashe Zdorovia". The interview was published under the telling title: “Nervous System and COVID-19: Why Doctors Began to Talk About Long-COVID” (фото статьи в газете).

During the interview, Professor O. Tkachenko told about different patterns of neurology symptoms occurring alongside with COVID-19 disease, probable ways in which the virus affects nerve cells, the role of the immune system in the disease pathogenesis. She also mentioned the novel "long-COVID" term and the possibility of full recovery after the disease. Professor Tkachenko emphasized that any neurological complaints should be taken into account, and not only in case of COVID disease, and such patients should consult a neurologist.
