The Department of Microbiology was organized in 1921 in Kyiv State Institute of Advanced Training for Physicians. The founder and the first leader of the department was MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Beniash М. G., who had headed the department till 1941.

Till 1932 the department prepared mainly clinical laboratory doctors, as a result it was named the Department of Microbiology and Laboratory Diagnostics. At the same time the department trained the specialists on the basis of Kyiv municipal sanitary-and-epidemiologic station. 

In 1944 (after the liberation of Kyiv from the German occupation) the Department of Microbiology renewed its activity. In 1944-1958 it was headed by the Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Full Professor Drobotko V. G. 

In 1958-1963 the head of the Department of Microbiology was MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Rechmensky S. S.

 

In 1963-1975 the Department of Microbiology was headed by the Associate Professor Povelytsia F. D. 

In 1962–1977 the Department of Epidemiology was headed by Associate Professor Ivkina O. V.

 

In 1976-1992 the Department of Epidemiology was headed by MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Syniak K. M. 

 

 

 

In 1976-1997 the head of the Department of Microbiology was MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor, Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR Znamensky V. O. 

  

In 1992-1999 the head of the department was Frolov A. F., Full Professor, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, the NAMS of Ukraine and the AMS of the Russian Federation, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.

In 1999 the Department of Microbiology was reorganized and since that time it has been called the Department of Microbiology and Epidemiology. 

In 1998-2007 the head of the department was MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Bilko I. P. 

In 2007 the head of the department was MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Vynograd N. O.

In 2009-2014 the department was headed by  MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Gavura V. V.

Since 2014 the department has been headed by  MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Aydin G. Salmanov
