Oncosurgery of the highest category

At the Department of Oncology NMAPE named after P. L. Shupyk has been working since 1974, since 1999 - Professor of the Department of Oncology.

In 1971 he defended his Ph.D. thesis "Assessment of modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of mediastinal tumors", devoted to the clinical use of the developed method of intensive-concentration preoperative irradiation of malignant tumors of the mediastinum, which allowed to increase the radicalism of operations, improve survival rates of patients after combined treatment.

Accumulated in the clinic over the next 10 years, the experience of using the developed methodology and observing the results of the treatment of patients was generalized and presented in the monograph "Primary neoplasms of the mediastinum" (1982). New directions from this section of clinical oncology (clinical classification of mediastinal tumors, different types of needle biopsies of tumors, the method of combined treatment of malignant mediastinal tumors with preoperative intensive irradiation) have been proposed and for many years have been widely used in many oncological institutions of Ukraine and neighboring countries. Abroad and are used up to the present.

Since 1982, began to develop a framework for substantiation and clinical application of intraoperative cryodestruction in lung cancer. For the first time in practical medicine, the author applied an intraoperative cryodestruction to lung cancer, having outpaced similar foreign messages for 20 years. This was a new method of treatment that allowed an increase in the five-year survival rate of patients with peripheral lung cancer compared with independent radical surgical treatment from 33% to 61%, and in the third stage of the tumor - from 15% to 30%. The research was completed in 1990 in a doctoral thesis entitled "Modification of Radical Treatment and Development of Criteria for Prognosis in Patients with Lung Cancer".

From 2000, according to the planned scientific section of the Department of Tumors of the Breast Cancer of the National Cancer Institute, participated in the development and implementation of intraarterial regional chemotherapy in the clinical treatment of patients with malignant tumors of the mediastinum and malignant tumors of the thoracic wall. The first in the thoracic department of the National Cancer Institute began reconstruction and plastic surgery with large malignant tumors of the thoracic wall. At present, reconstructive-plastic operations are widely used in the practice of separation.

Along with the aforementioned directions of scientific and practical subjects, he initiated and began to study the influence of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy on the results of treatment for patients with lung cancer. This study continues to be carried out in the planned scientific issues of the Department of Breast Cancer Tumors of the National Cancer Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine until now.

Most scientific publications in medical journals, speeches at congresses and conferences of oncologists were devoted to questions of surgical, complex and combined treatment of patients with malignant neoplasms of the mediastinum, thoracic wall, and lung cancer. In total 174 scientific works were published, including 2 monographs, 3 methodical recommendations, 2 textbooks.

During 2010-2014 he studied the antitumor efficacy of the integrated use of cryodestruction of the tumor in conjunction with local microwave hyperthermia in malignant epithelial tumors of the oral cavity. The performed preliminary experimental studies provided the basis for the use of the technique in the clinic in patients with cancer of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. The results of the research were defended in 2014 in the candidate's thesis by the post-graduate student of the Oncology Department of the NMAPE named after P. L. Shupyk under the direction of Professor V. Zakharichev
