In September 2021, the School of Medicine Universidad Complutense in Madrid (Spain) hosted a three-week training course of the European School of Microsurgery - "Microsurgical reconstruction with free flaps".
This course was attended by Anastasia Ignatieva, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, performing a PhD dissertation at the Department of General and Emergency Surgery (Head of the Department, Doctor of Medicine, Professor VV Kryzhevsky) of the Shupyk National Healthcare University. Anastasia Ignatieva has completed a full course of theoretical and practical training in the field of microsurgical technique of tissue reconstruction with the free flaps in plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
This course was supported by the European School of Microsurgery. The training consisted of theoretical classes using materials and methods from the leading modern European clinics, as well as practicing on cadavers the microsurgical technique of creating a free flaps of tissue. That kind of flaps can be used for closing large superficial wounds and reconstruction of organs. The main advantage of the course was that participants had the opportunity not only to gain theoretical knowledge, but also to perform practical creation of free flaps from different parts of the body. Classes were held in such a way that all participants were divided into small groups consisting two-three doctors working with one cadaver, so that each of them could create the maximum number of tissue flaps. Thus, each surgeon was able to create 18-20 flaps from the head, neck, torso, upper and lower extremities.
The course was conducted by well-known in Europe and the world microsurgeons - Dr. Marco Innocenti, MD, Director of Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgery, University of Florence, Dr. Eric Santamaria, MD, Professor of Reconstructive Microsurgery, National University of Mexico, Dr. Jaume Masya, MD, professor and head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Hospital de la Santa Creu and Sant Pau / Hospital del Mar (UAB) and many other famous specialists.
Modern reconstructive microsurgery with free flaps is one of the youngest specialties in surgery and depends on the technological capabilities and funding for its acquisition by medical institutions of Ukraine. Knowledge and practical skills acquired during the European School of Microsurgery are very valuable for the further development of reconstructive surgery at the Department of General and Emergency Surgery and will be used in the Program of thematic improvement "Aesthetic Surgery of the face and body after weight loss".
