The first step for creating an independent discipline – Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology in Ukraine was the initiation of a course of lectures in children’s ENT-pathology by O.S Kolomiichenko in 1936, who worked in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (KIATP) at that period.
In September 1968 a course of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology was opened attached to the Department of Otorhhinolaryngology at KIATP by Full Professor S. I. Mostovoy on the base of Kyiv Region Clinical Hospital.
In January 1969 the independent Department of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology was created and due to this fact children’s otorhinolaryngology became an independent discipline. The Otorhinolaryngology Department of Pediatric Municipal Specialized Hospital No. 14 (60 beds) became the teaching one for the department.
Full Professor Ye. A. Yevdoschenko was the first Head and organizer of the department (1969-1975).
In May 1975 the department was reorganized into an associate-professor’s course headed by Associate Professor A.A. Layko, follower of Full Professor S.I. Mostovoy. In 1990 the department received its independent status again. The department was headed by Full Professor A.A. Layko up to 2001.
Since 2002 the department has been headed by Full Professor A.L. Kosakovskyi, follower of Full Professor O. A. Yevdoschenko.
In 2005 the department was renamed into the Department of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, Audiology and Phoniatrics. Today the Department of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, Audiology and Phoniatrics is a scientific, methodologic and medical center of children’s otorhinolaryngology in Ukraine.
The clinical bases of the department are National Pediatric specialized Hospital “OKMATDYT” (Head clinical base since creating the department (1969), Kyiv City Children’s Clinical hospital No. 1 (since 1989).
