Every October, the world traditionally observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, known as "Pink October." The "Pink Ribbon" campaign, which serves as the international symbol of the fight against breast cancer, began in 1985 to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Since 2005, Ukraine has annually marked October 20 as the Ukrainian Day of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Breast cancer is one of the most common oncological diseases among women. Every year, more than 2 million new cases are registered worldwide. Although this disease predominantly affects women, men are not immune to it (though breast cancer in men occurs 100 times less frequently than in women). This disease occurs when normal cells transform into malignant ones and grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. In its early stages, breast cancer may not show visible signs, making regular check-ups crucial. Diagnostic tools are constantly improving, leading to more accurate results. For instance, mammograms can detect tumors as small as 3 mm, which cannot be detected by touch. Therefore, early diagnosis is key.

The goal of healthcare and social workers is to encourage people to monitor their health, perform monthly breast self-examinations, consult a doctor promptly, undergo preventive screenings, and regularly get mammograms.

The Oncology Department reminds you of the importance of regular check-ups:

- Self-examinations should be done from day 5 to 12 of the menstrual cycle, or on the same day each month during menopause.

- Annual check-ups with a doctor should include breast ultrasound, and for women aged 50 and above, mammograms.

If you notice any concerning symptoms, do not wait—schedule an appointment with your doctor. The following symptoms should raise concern: nipple discharge, visible swollen veins, dimpling of the skin, redness on the skin or around the nipples, a sensation of warmth in the breast, skin bulging, or lumps in the breast.

You perform self-examinations not to find something, but to confirm that everything is fine. Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
