On December 21, 2021, a local conference of the Association of Anaesthesiologists of Kyiv was held, which was devoted to topical issues of kidney transplantation. The conference was organized by the Association of Anaesthesiologists of Kyiv, the Department of Paediatric Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care of Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine and the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology named after O. O. Shalimov. .

In compliance with the quarantine requirements, the conference was held in a virtual format on the GoToMeeting platform. Anaesthesiologists from Kyiv, interns and students of the Department of Paediatric Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, doctors of the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology named after O. O. Shalimov participated in the conference.

Speakers at the conference were surgeons and anaesthesiologists from the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology named after O. O. Shalimov. The presented reports covered actual issues related to donor and recipient preparing, anaesthesiologic support and postoperative management of kidney transplantation surgery.

The conference began with a report by the surgeon Vitaliy Zakordonets, Head of the Kidney Transplant Department, about the peculiarities of kidney transplantation in children with end-stage renal failure. The speaker outlined the most important aspects of patient selection and preparing, surgical features and further treatment, as well as he demonstrated clinical cases from their experience in the department. Anaesthesiologist and PhD student of the Department of Paediatric Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Maryna Kyrychenko, detailed and meaningful reviewed the kidney transplantation from the anaesthesiologists’ point of view. She emphasized the anaesthesiologic problems and the importance of maintaining the normal function of all body systems in the perioperative period.

Dr. Volodymyr Shelest, researcher and transplant coordinator of the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology named after O. O. Shalimov, spoke about the organization of teamworking and highlighted the tasks and functions of the transplant coordinator. He stressed the need for interaction and cooperation between all specialists involved in the process of kidney transplantation. At last, but not least, surgeon Oleksiy Voronyak made a report on immunosuppressive therapy in renal transplant recipients, in which he noted the prospects of the use of stem cells.

Long discussions after each of the reports showed a great interest of doctors in the presented topics. At the end of the conference, the participants noted the importance of the information received and expressed a desire to continue to hold local conferences of the Association on transplantation topics.
