The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine has made a significant contribution to the development of the specialty «anesthesiology» in Ukraine, it gave an impetus to the development of Ukrainian anesthesiology and intensive care. Its origin was preceded by the selfless work of enthusiasts and highly qualified doctors with broad erudition, which often went beyond medical knowledge.

At the origins of the specialty were outstanding personalities, among whom the first was the world-famous doctor and scientist M. Amosov.

An important stage in the history of the Department of Anesthesiology and intensive care should be considered the date of February 1, 1967, when the first Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care was created in Ukraine ( the head of the department professor Anatoliy Trishchynskiy) on the basis of the course of anesthesiology as part of the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesiology of Kyiv Institute of Advanced Training of Physicians (today Shupyk National Healthcare University). The first employees of the department were assistants A. Ya. Malovichko, A. Yu. Deputat, G. S. Zabroda, V. P. Zhalko-Tytarenko, V. M. Leliukh. In the same year, M. M. Samonin, V. O. Trotsevych were assigned to the positions of assistants, in 1968 – V. K. Khudoshyn; later – a whole cohort of assistants: G. A. Vasyliev, I. P. Shlapak, F. S. Vashchuk, G. I. Belebeziev, M. B. Dmytrieva, I. E. Dobush, V. K. Kuznietsov, A. L. Slobodyanyk, B. G. Pogodaiev, M. V. Bondar, F. S. Glumcher, S. P. Didovets.

With the participation of the Department's staff, the first independent intensive care unit was opened in 1966 in the multidisciplinary Hospital No. 14 in Kyiv (today – Oleksandrivska Hospital). In 1967, the assistant of the Department V. O. Trotsevych created a second intensive care unit with its own staff on the basis of the Kiev Regional Hospital. Employees of the department took an active part in the organization of intensive care units of Children's hospital No. 14, clinical hospitals No. 7, No. 17, organizations of the anesthesiology and intensive care service in the newly created Emergency Hospital, where it was also established Republican Center for acute poisoning. In addition, the Republican scientific and practical resuscitation anti-septic Center (today Ukrainian Medical Center for intensive care of sepsis) and intensive care units were organized in many health care institutions in Kyiv.

Since the beginning of 2016, the department has been headed by Professor O. A. Loskutov. The Department of Anesthesiology and intensive care of Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine is the main among departments of this profile in Ukraine. According to the results of the rating assessment of all departments for 2020, the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care took an honorable second place and first place among the Departments of the Surgical faculty. Employee presentations are presented at reputable international forums. Today, the staff of the department continues the glorious traditions of their predecessors.
