The Department of Dietology was founded the on the base of the Therapeutic Unit of the City Clinical Hospital No. 6 (“Medmistechko”), subordinate to Kyiv State Institute of Advanced Training of Physicians, according to the order of the Ministry of Health of the USSR, in 1965. In 1971 the department was renamed the Department of Gastroenterology and Dietology, in 2007 it became the Department of Gastroenterology, Dietology and Endoscopy.
The first head and organizer of the department was Full Professor M. S. Govorova (1914-1973).
From 1974 to 1990, the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Full Professor P. S. Fedyshyn (1921-1991).
In 1990 - 1997 the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Full Professor I. I. Degtyaryova.
Since 1997, the Department has been headed by the Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Natalia V. Kharchenko. N. V. Kharchenko is the Vice-President of the Ukrainian Gastroenterology Association, Member of International and European Association of Gastroenterologists, Nutritionists and Endoscopists, Head of the Consultative Expert Working Group " Gastroenterology. Pharmaceuticals" of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Since 1983 the department's staff members have headed Kyiv City Society of Gastroenterologists. In 1999 the annual National School of Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists of Ukraine was created by Full Professor N. V. Kharchenko.
The School Sessions are held in cooperation with the European Association for Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Nutritiology – EAGEN.
