The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology was founded in 1918.

At first there were 2 departments – the Department of Obstetrics, founded and headed by Honored Scientist, Full Professor H. V. Pysemsky, and the Department of Gynecology, founded and headed by Full Professor V. L. Lozynsky.

The departments united in 1946, and the united department was headed by Full Professor Yu. Ya. Yankelevych; the branch of the department was headed by Full Professor V. M. Khmelevsky.

In 1918 - 1990 about 6000 physicians improved their skills at the department.

In 1959 - 1971 the department was headed by Full Professor V. M. Savytsky.

In 1971 - 1993 the department was headed by Corresponding Member of the AMS of the USSR, the AMS of Ukraine, the AMS of Russia, the NAS of Ukraine, Full Professor L. V. Tymoshenko.

In 1993 the department was headed by Yu. P. Vdovychenko, talented physician, scientist and teacher, one of the youngest professors in Ukraine, disciple of Full Professor L. V. Tymoshenko.

Full Professor Yu. P. Vdovychenko has trained 16 MD, Drs. Sc. and 88 MD, PhDs. Under his guidance there are carried out investigations concerning prediction, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the reproductive dysfunction in women as well as prevention of pyoseptic complications in obstetrics and gynecology.

Full Professor Yu. P. Vdovychenko combines his clinical work with the activities at the academy, being the First Pro-Rector of NMAPE and Deputy Head of the Specialized Academic Council on Theses Defense on specialty Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Obstetrics and Gynecology; editor-in-chief of the research and practical journals "Reproductyvne Zdorov'ia Zhinky" (Reproductive Health of Woman) and "Zdorov'ia Zhinky" (Health of Woman). In 2002 Full Professor Yu. P. Vdovychenko was elected the member of the Expert Board of the Higher Attestation Commission on the Issues of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2010 he became the Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In 2015 MD, Dr. Sc., Associate Professor O. V. Gorbunova became the acting head of the department. 

In 2021 MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Nataliia Yu. Pedachenko became the acting head of the department
