The Department of Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology and Radiation Safety (under the name of medical Radiology) was founded in 1957. The course of Radiation Hygiene became a part of the department in 1992.
The department was headed by: Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Full Professor Oleksiy O. Gorodetsky (1957-1960), D. Bi. Sci., Full Professor Mykola F. Lipkan (1960-1966), Honored Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine, Winner of the State Prize of Ukraine, MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Tamara P. Syvachenko (1966 – 1993), Honored Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine, MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Dmytro S. Mechev (1993 – 2016), MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor Oleg V. Shcherbina (since 2016).
Under the leadership of Full Professor Tamara P. Syvachenko the department managed to extend the scope training doctors, to increase the staff members in number.
The Chernobyl disaster in 1986 caused the necessity of training radiation medicine doctors. The staff members initiated and began conducting one-month courses over the issue, training 80 – 100 doctors per year.
In 1989 it was founded a radioimmunology laboratory at the department. There were developed and implemented more than 50 radioimmunology techniques used to detect hormone level, tumor markers, state of metabolism, etc. The postgraduate course in Radiology was arranged as far back as 1951.
In 1972 three staff members, i.e. T. P. Syvachenko, V. P. Ishchenko, V. K. Kalyna, were awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology for the development and implementation of the national radiodiagnostic apparatus. In 1979 Full Professor T. P. Syvachenko was awarded the honorary title of Honored Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine. Associate Professor V. K. Kalyna was awarded the honorary titles of Honoured Inventor of the USSR and Honored Innovator of the USSR, Full Professor D. S. Mechev was decorated with Golden and Silver Medals of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy (VDNG) of the USSR (1979, 1981); in 2003 he was awarded the honorary title of Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine, in 2008 he was decorated with the golden medal of “Novyi Chas” (The New Time) for accumulated inventions concerning the investigated pathogenesis of local radioreactions. Full Professor O. I.Avramenko is Honored Doctor of Ukraine, holder of a number of State Prizes for his participation in eliminating the sequels of the Chernobyl disaster.
Annually, the postgraduate students of the department defend their dissertations and theses. Among them 40 doctoral and PhD (supervisor Full Professor O. O. Gorodetsky), 7 doctoral dissertations and 37 PhD theses (supervisor Full Professor T. P. Syvachenko), 1 doctoral dissertation and 4 PhD theses (supervisor Full Professor M. F. Lipkan), 5 doctoral dissertations and 15 PhD theses (supervisor Full Professor D. S. Mechev).
The staff members publish an average of 25-30 works per year.
320 physicians from 32 countries were trained.
