Since the beginning of 2025, the scientific output of the Department of Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy at the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine has been enriched with three new methodological guidelines. These documents reflect current, evidence-based approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common renal conditions and represent a crucial resource for general practitioners in family medicine, nephrologists, urologists, and other healthcare providers.

Each of the newly published guidelines focuses on a distinct clinical area and offers practical value for improving patient care:

  1. Urolithiasis: Medical Management and Renoprotection

This guideline provides a comprehensive framework for the management of patients with nephrolithiasis. It outlines diagnostic algorithms, metabolic and genetic evaluations, strategies for recurrence prevention (metaphylaxis), and individualized renoprotective interventions. The authors emphasize the importance of dietary management and the correction of metabolic disturbances as cornerstones of prevention and renal function preservation.

  1. Urinary Tract Infections

This document addresses key aspects of classification, risk stratification, antimicrobial treatment, and prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs), based on the latest available evidence. It highlights the updated classification system proposed by the European Association of Urology in March 2025, which replaces the traditional division into uncomplicated and complicated UTIs with a clinically relevant distinction between localized and systemic infections.

  1. Assessment of Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate and Albuminuria Categories

This guideline highlights contemporary methods for evaluating kidney function through estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria classification. It presents the application of validated eGFR equations—based on creatinine, cystatin C, or both—as endorsed by the KDIGO 2024 guidelines. These tools are essential for the early detection and risk stratification of chronic kidney disease (CKD), with important implications for disease prevalence and patient prognosis. The guideline also includes answers to frequently asked clinical questions, enhancing its relevance to everyday clinical practice.
