The department was founded in 1975 as the Department of Traumatology and Military Surgery for the purpose of improving traumatologists’ and army medical officers’ skill on the issues of  traumatology and military surgery.

The first head of the department was MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor V. M. Levenets, Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine, Winner of the State Prize of Ukraine, Full Member of the New York Academy of Sciences. In 2001 the department was headed by MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor, Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine G. I. Gertsen. Since the foundation of the department the staff members have conducted the courses of specialization, general advanced training in traumatology and orthopaedics, thematic advanced training in the up-to-date treatment of patients with injured bones and joints; orthopaedic polytraumata, open injuries of bones and joints. The staff members published 265 scientific papers, including 6 monographs, 4 books of the textbook, 5 manuals, 3 methodical guidelines of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine; they obtained 8 patents of Ukraine, property rights and defended 2 doctoral and 4 candidate’s theses.
