Every year on February 4th, World Cancer Day is observed, which was established in 2000 at the first World Summit Against Cancer held in Paris. Signed by heads of state and leading medical centers, the Paris Charter for the Fight Against Cancer brings together scientists, practicing physicians, the public, and government bodies to conquer one of the most dangerous pathologies – cancer.
The main objectives of World Cancer Day are:
- Raising awareness about cancer as one of the most prevalent diseases of modern civilization.
- Drawing society's attention to the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment of malignant tumors.
- Formulating tasks facing the world in the fight against cancer.
Equal access to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care can save lives every day. By increasing public awareness of cancer detection and treatment, we reduce fears, enhance understanding and motivation, dispel myths and misconceptions, and change attitudes and behaviors towards the disease. Quality of life for cancer patients is a priority in treatment, hence such directions as psychological and physical rehabilitation, as well as reconstructive interventions, are rapidly developing.
Timely diagnosis, achieved through awareness of cancer and the availability of medical assistance, ensures a positive clinical outcome in over a third of cases.
