Associate Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy Iryna Vlasenko took part in the 5th Congress of the African Society of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition and the African Diabetes Congress in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire).
She made a presentation on the role of a pharmacist in a multidisciplinary diabetes care team. Iryna Vlasenko shared the developments in pharmaceutical care for patients with diabetes, which were developed as part of her dissertation.
The importance of a pharmacist is especially relevant for countries with limited human and financial resources. The problem of diabetes in Africa is complicated by the limited access of patients to medical care, even access to insulin and glucose control. Diabetes-related healthcare costs per person with diabetes (20-79 years old) in Africa averaged about 500 USD in 2021, compared to 8300 USD in North America. The disease is also complicated by numerous infectious diseases that often accompany patients.
Iryna Vlasenko, as Vice President of the International Diabetes Federation, took part in a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Health of Côte d'Ivoire, organized by the Head of the IDF Africa Region, Prof. Abodo J.
