The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was founded in Ukrainian Institute of Advanced Training of Pharmacists in 1938 with the view of improving the qualification of pharmacists in the quality control of drugs (in 1933-1938 it was performed at Kyiv Institute of Training and Re-training of Pharmaceutical Personnel).
From 1933 to 1937 Institute of Advanced Training of Pharmacists joined Kyiv State Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians and in 1938 the full-scale work on the postgraduate training of pharmacists started. During the war years, from 1941 till September 1944 the department didn’t function and it renewed its activity in autumn 1944. In 1953-1956 the Department of Pharmacognosy joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry; the Department of Pharmacognosy in 1956-1989 became the Department of Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology. In 1989-1992 the department included the course of clinical pharmacology. In 1992 the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was reorganized into the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy. In 2008 the department was renamed into the Department of Quality Control and Standardization of Drugs.
The Department is located in the administrative building of the Academy; it has its own lecture rooms, laboratory rooms and the rooms for doing research; it is outfitted with the equipment for doing the teaching process and research work, including computers and multimedia equipment.
The first head of the department was Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, Dr. Sc. (Pharmacy), Full Professor Ya. A. Fialkov (1938-1954). The department was also headed by PhDs (Pharmacy), Associate Professors D. A. Shostakov (1953-1954), Ts. L. Shakh (1955-1963), F. Ye. Kagan (1963-1965) and for a long time it was run by the Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Full Professor N. P. Maksyutina (1966-1992). In 1992-2004 the head of the department was Full Professor O. M. Grytsenko. From 2004 till now the head of the Department has been the Honored Worker of Pharmacy of Ukraine, Dr. Sc. (Pharmacy), Full Professor N. O. Vetyutneva.
