The Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Immunology was founded on 25 December 1992 as a Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases due to an increase in the incidence of infectious diseases, primarily epidemics of diphtheria. In 1995, after implementation of sub-specialty “pediatric immunology”, the department has started training of specialists in pediatric immunology. In 2002 the department was renamed as the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Immunology.

The main directions of the Department work: infectious diseases in children, diagnosis and treatment of primary immunodeficiency, immune prophylaxis of infectious diseases.

The Department has taken an active part in research of burden of vaccine-controlled infections, including in cooperation with international organizations, and implementation of immune prophylaxis measures against the infections in Ukraine.

For the first time in Ukraine the Department has actively began to develop the direction of diagnosis and treatment of congenital defects in the immune system – primary immunodeficiency. Active detection of primary immunodeficiency is carried out, which includes both a broad educational program among general practitioners and the training of narrow specialists – pediatric immunologists, as well as active medical and diagnostic work of the department staff.

Since 2004 the Department represents Ukraine in the Central-Eastern European Project on primary immunodeficiency “J-Project”. Within the framework of this scientific and educational project, the Department conducts scientific and practical school-seminars as part of continuous medical education of pediatricians and pediatric immunologists.

From 1992 till 2016 the Department was headed by Professor Ludmyla Chernyshova. Since 2016 the Department is headed by Professor Alla Volokha.
