The Department of Diabetology was founded in 2009 under the decree of Rector of Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Full Professor Yu. V. Voronenko.
Since 2009 the department has been headed by Borys M. Mankovsky, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor, Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine.
The creation of the department was conditioned by the continuing growth of diabetes mellitus in the population, on the one hand, and the different medical specialties physicians incompetence in this field, on the other hand. The importance of creating the department was accentuated in the Ukraine State Diabetes Mellitus Program (2009).
