It the Department of Anesthesiology and IC we are constantly conducting practical and simulation exercises for residents. So, on December 6-7, 2018, a hand-over master-class with the involvement of leading specialists and modern ultrasound equipment and supplies for regional anesthesia took place.

Famous Ukrainian specialists from Lviv were invited to the master-class -  Albokrinov AA and Perova-Sharonova VM, and also Marziyniv VV from Feofaniya Hospital. Each of the invited experts has publications (including international ones) and the experience of conducting similar workshops at symposia with international participation, which is why residents were very excited about this event. Moderator was assistant professor MM Pylypenko, and clinical resident of the department KV Kamenyuk presented ultrasound diagnosis of traumatic haemorrhage by FAST protocol.

From the very early morning, the master class began in the operating room of Kyiv City Emergency Hospital, where experts along with local doctors carried out ultrasound-guided regional blockade of the shoulder plexus, as well as the abdominal wall block (TAB-block). Local hospital residents were able to monitor the implementation of these procedures live, while for others educational videos were recorded.

Subsequently, the training was held in the lecture room of the department, where about 80 residents were divided into 3 "stations", and they worked out practical skills on various portable ultrasound machines of high and expert class.

All rendering procedures were performed on volunteers from a group of interns, as is usually done at similar events in developed countries. The "first station" was trained to visualize the upper extremity and chest nerves, as well as the BLUE protocol for assessing lung function. At the "second station", visualization of the nerves of the lower limb and abdominal wall was performed, as well as visualization of the needle in-plane and out of plane already on the vascular dummy with a special ultrasound gel. The "third station" was engaged in ultrasound search for central veins, as well as ultrasound diagnosis of traumatic bleeding. Before each hour of practical work, specialists made a 15 minute presentation explaining the features of the visualization technique and the execution of the blockade or puncture procedure.

During the 2 days of the master class, every resident had a possibility to practice visualizing the main groups of nerve plexuses and vessels in different ultrasound machines under the control of each of the experts.

After the master class, a final discussion was held - by the methodology of debriefing were discussed the achievements, the difficulties faced by residents during practical training and the prospects of such training. Most residents not only expressed their satisfaction and desire to continue their studies, but also noted that they attended such a master class for the first time.
