From the first days of russian invasion on the territory of Ukraine, scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department of Surgery and Vascular Surgery of Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine actively and decisively took a part in the management and organization of surgical treatment at clinical bases of the Department of Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
Work was carried out to coordinate the training of doctors in the reception of wounded and injured soldiers and civilians for the functioning of rational (diagnostic) logistics from the emergency department to the operating room, the formation of duties and operational teams according to priority performing surgical interventions on the chest and abdomen, retroperitoneal organs and main arteries and veins with their gunshot, shrapnel and mine injuries, participation in daily morning and evening rounds, organization and holding of consiliums, medical and clinical consultations.
Regional anesthesia technologies were aggressively introduced into routine surgical practice as a component of enhanced recovery after surgery. Electric welding of biological tissues was used to reduce the duration of surgery and to reduce blood loss. Diagnostic laparoscopy and FAST protocol for ultrasound examination of the thoracic and abdominal cavities significantly reduced the need for diagnostic surgery (laparotomy and thoracotomy). Our teams actively used VAC-systems (local negative pressure technology) in the postoperative period to accelerate the healing of gunshot, shrapnel and mine injuries.
Significant consultative work was carried out among the medical surgical community on optimal tactics for further support of operated patients of the clinic evacuated to other medical institutions of our country, as well as primary patients in medical institutions of Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Chernivtsi and their regions.
Using personal connections with volunteer and charitable organizations of our country, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, provided a large amount of valuable and much-needed humanitarian medical care for surgery.
Taking into account membership of our employees in relevant European surgical societies and active citizenship, they take part in drawing attention to the genocide of the Ukrainian people by Russia and the consequences of active hostilities and in creating decisive steps by the international surgical community against the aggressor country.
